I had a 3-year stint playing hockey in college, but the young punk in me cut that short. I went back to Chicago to continue English Literature and Philosophy at DePaul University. I absorbed the city a bit too much and knew I had to make a major life change. I quit school with 2 semesters left and moved to Montana in May of 1996.

About
My carpentry career began in the summer of my junior year of high school. 1989. I was 17 years old, and a group of us were playing sand volleyball when a guy pulled up in a white pickup. He asked if any of us wanted a job building custom closets. I said, “Hell yeah.” So, I started building custom closets! I played football and hockey; hockey became a 10-month-a-year ordeal. The point being: I never had time to think about what I was going to do. I was practicing my autograph for my NHL career as a goaltender! I didn’t have any idea this summer job would become my life.
I learned to pack mules and horses. I thought I’d be a hunting guide for life! Always a dreamer, though, I knew I needed something else. I went all over the construction field. I started with custom furniture, then built bridges in Chicago and Maine, residential footings and walls in concrete, a log home builder, a custom home builder, and foreman—a lot. I learned so much from the previous jobs I had taken on, and that experience landed me as a superintendent in Bozeman, Big Sky, and Yellowstone Club. I, again, thought, “This is it. I found what I’m supposed to do!”
Being a superintendent wasn’t as glorious as the title might suggest. I felt more like a babysitter for grown men. I saw a lack of pride from many of the contractors; most were there just for the paycheck. I’ve always been enamored with the building process. Its success requires everyone’s effort, incorporating teamwork and dedication to delivering a great product, from subcontractor to subcontractor. "Ride for the Brand," as they say. Most problems have a solution, yet I faced constant pushback even when I offered answers. I know the process—I love the process—but the title of "Superintendent" wasn’t worth the stress and unhappiness it brought to something I once viewed with great joy. I had a good, long conversation with a friend about it. He had a lot to say, but the most important advice was, "Start investing in yourself. Open your own business, and do it NOW!"
I started Hogan Design in March of 2018, under the guise of bringing back honesty and integrity to the construction world. Carpentry is a craft that I love, and I want to put that into every facet of my designs, be it a simple deck or an interior trim job on a $8 million home. I put my heart and soul into every project I take on. I firmly believe we have a lasting impression on every build or project completed. I create and maintain a positive work environment from the owner to the subcontractor. A piece of us is left with everything we touch. I want to leave a positive and unforgettable experience on every project.
I have a very solid grasp on schedules and timeframes. If I am unable to complete your project on schedule, I can help get you to an outfit that will. Having worked all over this valley, I have an unbelievable list of very talented and like-minded contractors. I hold that in high regard. Let's build Bozeman gracefully and with a smile. Services
I am a carpentry-driven individual who enjoys all facets of the craft. I work alone with my female chocolate lab, Driver, but can get help if a project calls for it. I have a certain way I like things done, and working alone ensures it is done to my specifications. I work 7 days a week if needed.
- Decks - Any size, shape, or form. Composite or wood.
- Remodels - I can act as a general contractor or superintendent for everything not carpentry related. As stated, I have a great list of contractors.
- Interior Trim - Hanging doors, base and case, extension jambs, stair skirts, wall caps, shelving, built-in units. Anything and everything trim-related.
- Flooring - LVT flooring, or as some call it, “Click and Stick.”
- Cabinet Installation - Complete cabinet install.
- General Contractor - If you want me to do it all: plans approved by the city, hiring subcontractors, scheduling, running the entire project. An important note: all payments are made by the owner to subcontractors. These payments can be through a title company for tracking and transparency.
